About Us

Our email:  contact@SaveIndianDemocracy.org

This website is to further the preservation and protection of democracy in India.  It is not affiliated to any party in India. It came out of group of NRI’s who are alarmed at the possible gross misuse of Electronic Voting Machines in recent elections that is raised by several political parties in the country (including ruling party).   The issue deserves serious attention and the abandonment of EVMs across the world  is indicator of the wide spread concern for lack of transparency and verifiability in their use in any democracy.

Our Organization consults with team of professionals across the World.  We work closely with VeTA (Citizens for Verifiability, Transparency and Accountability in Elections whose members include Hari Prasad of Net India who recently went on Indian TV showing tamperability of EVMs,   GVL Narasimha Rao, a psephologist who wrote the book on EVM,  Democracy at Risk,  VV Rao of NGO Jana Chaitanya Vaidika who filed lawsuit in Supreme Court,  Omesh Saigal IIT Delhi alumnus and retired IAS official who challenged ECI about vulnerability of EMVs,  Satinath Chaudhary who filed lawsuit with Supreme Court,  Mr. Sanjay Parikh, Supreme Court attorney and several others such as Rahul Mehta who showed ways that elections can be manipulated and Ajay Jagga an attorney very active on raising EVM issues.  There are several other activists such as Hanuman Chaudhary, Sameer Jalnapurkar,  Jagadish Setty,  Kirit Somaiya and others who are working to raise the consciousness of the country on the danger of using stand alone EVM machines which  many countries are discarding.  Our work complements the work of those like Dr. Subramanian Swamy who is pursuing this issue legally.

The International Experts we consult with include Dr. David Dill of Stanford who is considered pioneer in election reform in United States,  Rop Gonggrijp from Netherlands, well known computer hacker and successful entrepreneur who was instrumental in banning EVMs usage in Netherlands in spite of millions of dollars spend on EVMs and used in several prior elections,  Dr. Ulrich Wiesner and his attorney Dr. Till Jaeger who filed lawsuit against lack of transparency in usage of EVMs in German Supreme Court that resulted in effectively banning EVMs in Germany,  Dr. Alex Halderman, computer security professor from University of Michigan  who showed tamperability of EVMs in US and performed studies for California State and other well known activists in US such as Bev Harris, Kathleen Wynne and Paul Chelot.

The objective of our Organization echoes Dr. Dill’s assertion, “Computerized voting  equipment is inherently subject to programming error, equipment malfunction, and malicious tampering. It is therefore crucial that voting equipment provide a voter-verifiable audit trail, by which we mean a permanent record of each vote that can be checked for accuracy by the voter before the vote is submitted, and is difficult or impossible to alter after it has been checked. Voter-verifiable audit trail should be one of the essential requirements for certification of new voting systems.  It is not enough the machines and systems put in place are reliable, but they should be perceived as reliable”.

We recognize the paper voting has its disadvantages such as booth capture etc, but what is of concern with EVM is there is great potential for mass abuse at a much larger scale, specifically in systems such as used in India where there is  no backup data to contest the data recorded using the machine.
